Paint the Aspens!

2008

Welcome to Paint the Aspens! We hope you’ll join us for this wonderful plein air painting opportunity in the lush fall color of the White Mountains of east central Arizona. This event, hosted by Joyous Lake Gallery, is in its fourth year, although this is the first year it is an APAP event.  And the first year we have offered CASH prizes! The White Mountains are beautiful to paint in any season, but it is when the aspens turn that they are at their most beautiful!

Deadline for application:  September 15, 2008. Send application and fees to Joyous Lake Gallery, 1869 E. White Mountain Blvd., Pinetop, AZ 85935. Check should be made out to Joyous Lake Gallery, with APAP in the memo line.

Show dates: October 11 through October 25, with the reception taking place Saturday from 2 to 5 pm. The hours are subject to change.

(hung vertically ) One may be a studio piece, max size 16" x 20", and the other two must be completed on their stamped canvas/paper during the paint-out week. All pieces must be properly framed and wired for hanging etc. (Note: gold frames are not popular in this area).

To become an artist member of APAP, fill out the application at http://arizonapleinairpainters.com, and send the requisite number of images. Jurying into artist membership takes about a month, so get your application in early.

Commission: 40%, with 5% going to APAP, 35% retained by the gallery.

Scheduled paintouts: will take place Monday, Oct. 5 through Thursday, October 9. Attending any of them will provide camaraderie and proven locations. You are NOT required to attend the scheduled paintouts and are encouraged to explore on your own. If you wish to paint on the White Mountain Apache Reservation, which has some very beautiful country, you MUST be with a group, since this is elk hunting season and we must make special arrangements with the game wardens for each day and location.

Show Image:  Got a dynamite plein air piece, preferably showcasing aspens? Email an image to pentemeyer@earthlink.net for consideration as the show image for this event! File should be no more than 500 pixels across; if your image is chosen, we will request a larger file.

Advertising opportunities: The local glossy monthly, the Maverick, has inexpensive space. If you wish to co-op with other artists, 1/6 page is $83 apiece, and well worth the expense. Joyous Lake will help set it up and send you rate sheets if necessary. Additional opportunities are also available in Art-Talk and Southwest Art.

Additional Advertising: 1,000 postcards will be developed and mailed prior to the opening by the gallery, and an additional 1,000 distributed to local motels and cabins. If you would like to mail additional cards to your mailing list, please contact Joyous Lake with your request prior to September 1. You are welcome to send your list to the gallery for them to mail out the cards, just be aware they will retain those names and addresses for their mailing list.

Accommodations: There are plentiful accommodations in Pinetop-Lakeside and the surrounding area. We will have special rates at several motels. Campsites are also common, and the site at Hawley Lake is a must if you’re into hearing the elk bugle and the coyotes howl. One of our artists often hosts a campfire up there during the week. Fishing at this time of year is fabulous, too. Permits are required.

Other notes: Pinetop-Lakeside is at 7,000 ft. elevation, and most of the painting areas are higher than that. Thunderstorms are common throughout Monsoon and afterward. This is not the desert. It can be COLD and/or windy, not to mention wet, so dress accordingly!

Hope to see you there!
