APAP
Paint- Outs for
  2008/09

Would you like to show off your area to the rest of the APAP members and be a host for a paint-out? All we need is for you to provide good clear directions, some photos of the location would be nice, and for you to be there to greet the artists when they arrive. Send us a date that works for you to us and the location. We get back to you for details. Show off your part of Arizona.
cindyLcarrillo@yahoo.com

Paint-outs will be held throughout the year at locations all over Arizona.  We want to provide opportunities to explore this wonderful state, and discover new places from one end of the State to the other. Paint-outs will begin in January 2008 and a calendar will be posted on this page. We would like to hear from members about places they would like to host a paint-out anywhere in the state.   Watch this page, locations and dates could be changed.

We can't control the weather. A paint-out may be cancelled for any reason. Be ready to make it a good paint day anyway. Use your good judgment before taking questionable roads.

11-12   Hart Prairie Conservancy near Flagstaff    "Beat the Heat"

High Prairie by David Haskell

Sheila Savanah

Painting Hart Prairie was Cool.

The sky was blue, the afternoon thunderheads spectacular, and the air was just so cool and refreshing.  The fantastic weather made you want to paint all day, and some did.  Nine APAP members gathered among the bright green aspens and fields of wildflowers to capture the essence of this very special Nature Conservancy Preserve.  Those who stayed in the log cabins found them to be quaint and very comfortable.  Others camped nearby and met with the others each morning at the main cabin to compare notes and discuss good painting locations.   Thanks to our APAP organizer, Dawn Sutherland, this paint-out will stand out as one of the very best of the year.  Dawn is planning other paint-outs at Nature Conservancy Preserves throughout Arizona.  We hope to be able to paint at Hart Prairie every year.

In attendance were:

>Guru Kerin,
>Toni Perrin
>Diane Scholar
>Sheila Savannah
>Barbara Donahue
>Dawn Sutherland
>Jerry Pond
>Dave Haskell
>Linda Umphrey
          Reported By David Haskell

Directions:

Approach Flagstaff and take Hwy 180 north out of Flag.  Most highway signs indicate "Hwy 180/Grand Canyon"  180 is also known as Ft. Valley Road.  (This means traveling through a good piece of the city and going out the northeast corner of town toward the Snowbowl ski area.)  Once you pass the turn for Snowbowl, continue on 180 just a few more miles and watch for a yellow highway caution (diamond-shaped) sign on the right indicating to turn on headlights.  The road to Hart Prairie is almost immediately after that...FS 151.  Turn right and follow that road all the way in to the property.  Along that dirt road, there are several opportunities to turn off.  Just stay on FS151.  It will make a large bend to the left and the gate for the TNC property will be on the right.  Once through the gate, half-mile or so on a rather narrow dirt road will take one right up to the Conservancy buildings.

I plan to be there Sunday evening and on into Monday afternoon and should have my cell phone with me, although I don't know how good reception is.  My # is
(928) 593-0604.  Any time I've been back in there, the road is in pretty good condition.  I wouldn't say 4WD is necessary, high clearance might be helpful, but I don't want to scare any one off.
A caveat about following routes marked "Grand Canyon".  Hwy 89 will also take one to the Grand Canyon and may also be so marked in some locations.  Do NOT take that one or you'll be on the wrong side of the mountains.  I know how to traverse a route there, but I'm not about to advise anyone else on how to do it.
Dawn Sutherland is our host for this Paint-out.  dawnsuther@gmail.com

Joyous Lake Gallery

928-367-1319

“Plein air painting, or painting on location, is a long tradition with landscape artists,” said Gwen Meyer, owner of Joyous Lake Gallery. “There is a special excitement in a piece that has been produced onsite. We will have wonderful areas for them to paint in!  Locations this year will include Escudilla Mountain, the Sunrise area, Forest Road 117 toward Green’s Peak, and probably Woodland Lake Park and Big Springs.  Its our most beautiful season of the year, so we will be looking for artwork that showcases that beauty. If you see someone painting, give them a toot or stop and say hello!”  Meyer guides the artists to specific paint-out locations, although they are free to paint anywhere in the White Mountains they choose.

November
7/8/9  "Paint Down on the Farm"
Deep in the big city is a lovely old farm with a pecan grove, old farm buildings, two excellent restaurants, a gift store, and a tool shed turned into a lovely studio. Cindy Carrillo is the Artist in Residence at The Artist Studio and invites artists to come on down and paint. Part of our mission is education and we want to introduce Plein Air to the customers of The Farm. This oasis in the city has a working organic farm that supplies most of the fine restaurants in town, rows of flowers, old farm equipment, plenty to paint. There will be coffee & rolls ready on Fri. Sat. & Sun. mornings and instructions on where NOT to set your easel.  We will request that you register with Cindy so The Farm can have a head count. This place is very busy on weekends with people coming for picnic lunches and to show and walk the property. We want APAP members to be ready to answer questions about plein-air, hand out flyers about The Artist Studio, and hand out your business cards. So, plan to come down for the weekend, go see the Cowboy Artist show, downtown Scottsdale galleries, Chandler Mall shopping and painting at The Farm at South Mountain.  We will be painting on the grounds all three days so come anytime. Mornings and over lunch is a great time because of all the visitors.

On Friday Nov. 7th Toni Perrin will be doing an oil painting demo.
On Sunday, Nov. 9th, Linda Dellandre
will be doing a pastel demo. Come watch and learn.
