Methods

Most of my work has been done plein-air using a small pochade box that travels easily with me everywhere. My surface is usually board covered in canvas, that way the sunlight does not shine through the back of the canvas while I am painting. Some of my plein air work is used as a jump-off point to create a studio piece that is much larger. By far most of my work is done on the spot, they turn out so much fresher, clean, and I enjoy being outdoors much more than working in the studio.

All of my work is in oil, using watercolor for my sketches, and travel journals. Occasionally I create handmade books, work in gouache, and do woodcut prints. I find that this really helps me stay fresher when I go back and pick up my oil brush.

I also set out to paint a wide variety of subjects, this really helps me keep from using a formula in mixing my paint. Canvas sizes range from  5” x 7” up to 30” x 40”.

My Goal as an artist

Born and raised in the rural mining town of Superior, Arizona, having a dad who was a geologist, and in a family that camped all over the country, instilled in me, a real love for the natural world.  Painting landscapes, plein- air has been a perfect fit. The natural world that we have around us is changing rapidly, being paved over so quickly that open land will become something the old-timers talk about. Even manmade buildings that have history and meaning are being torn down for “new, better”. The inherent beauty of our land is sometimes allusive to the traveler moving down the freeway at high speed.      All of this really fuels the fire in me to paint what I see and what I am drawn to.  If I can capture a little piece of time, space, light, and atmosphere, maybe the viewer can see what he has been missing. Paintings are like little windows of the world, they pale (no matter how good the painter) in comparison to Gods handwork, but can give us a reminder, a memory of places we have been, or of people we love.  I strive continually to get better and hone my skills in the hopes that my paintings will even in a small way help people to stop and see the world differently.
